vs. Romper vs One-Piece
Layette
A layette is a
collection of clothing for a newborn child. The term "layette set" is commonly
used in the United States to refer to gift sets of baby
clothes.
Traditionally, women would hand-sew their baby's clothes during
their pregnancy. Today "layette" is often used to identify a baby clothing
section of a store. The term can also be used for bedding, accessories, and
baby care items.
Onesie is
trademarked by Gerber but is also known as "onesize" is American English for a
bodysuit for infants designed to conceal a diaper when worn. It is also called
a creeper, diaper shirt or snap suit. The British English
equivalent is babygro. Onesie is registered to Gerber Childrenswear,
Inc. The shirt extends past the waist and has snaps or buttons that allow it to
be closed over the crotch, with enough extra room to accommodate a diaper.
One-Pieces are beneficial to the wearer and care giver alike because they offer
support to help keep the diaper in place. One-Pieces are frequently worn by
infants in place of a shirt due to their ability to stay tucked inside the
waist of pants, which is difficult to maintain with infants wearing regular
style shirts. One-Pieces also are sometimes made so that the shirting material
extends down the thigh about half-way to the knees, with snaps along the crotch
to allow for the diaper to be changed without removing the garment completely.
They may also cover the entire leg and feet. One-Pieces are popular gifts for
expecting or new mothers. They are sometimes incorporated into party games
played during a baby shower. One activity is for guests to custom decorate
plain One-Pieces prior to the arrival of the expecting or new mother.
One-Pieces come in various sizes : Preemie, 0-3 months 3-6 months, 6-12 months
and 12-18 months
Romper Suit
A romper
suit is a one-piece garment worn by children and sometimes women. Somewhat
similar to a coverall, it is loose fitting and usually has shorter legs that
may be gathered at the end.
Rompers appeared in the 1910s. Their
popularity peaked in the 1950s when they were used by children as playwear and
by women as leisure- and beachwear. Thereafter the garment has continued to be
used by infants and toddlers; however, it has become less common among older
girls and women, although never disappearing entirely. Since 2006 rompers have
enjoyed a minor renaissance as a fashionable garment for women. Several
